Abstract
451,398. Safety devices for lift cages. WAYGOOD-OTIS, Ltd., Falmouth Road, New Kent Road, London. Nov. 22, 1935, No. 32394. Convention date, June 15. [Class 78 (iii)] Safety apparatus for a lift cage comprises jaws 58 which are pivoted on a member 55 slidably mounted on rods 100 suspended from the cage, and which, when brought into initial engagement with guide rails 16 effect movement of the member 55 towards the cage whereby the jaws are applied to the rails with a force due to the weight of the cage. When the speed of the cage becomes excessive, the governor 22 releases a catch 45 to permit clutches 33, 34 to fall and grip the governor rope 21, whereby a hitch 48 is released from a carrier 50 on the cage and a pull exerted on a rope 51. This rope, through linkages 107, 122, 123 and 112, 116, 117 respectively, effects upward movement of the member 55 on the rods 100, whereby levers 75 are rotated anticlockwise about pivots 81 to force wedges 71 between rollers 72 on the inner end of the jaws and apply shoes 64 to the guide rails 16. This retards the downward motion of the member 55 so as to bring it nearer the cage and cause the weight of the cage to be transmitted through springs 85 to the levers 75 to augment the force applying the shoes to the guide rails and eventually arrest the movement of the cage. The seats 159 of the springs may be connected together by linkage to ensure that equal forces are transmitted by the springs to the respective guide shoes. A buffer 135 is provided for engagement with an abutment 134 on the cage. The safety apparatus may be mounted on the counterweight of the cage. Specification 7759/92, [CLass 78], is referred to.
