Abstract
451,394. Type-bar-making machines. INTERTYPE, Ltd.. 215, Farnham Road, Slough, Buckinghamshire.-(Klingberg, E. G. ; 4107, 47th Avenue, Long Island City, and Anderson, D. L.; 360, Furman Street, Brooklyn, both in New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 18, 1935, No. 28828. [Class 100 (iii)] Moulds.-In moulds for typebar-making machines, such as that described in Specification 14582/90, [Class 100], in which liners inserted between two relatively fixed mould members define the ends of the casting slot, and there may be also intermediate liners dividing the casting slot into compartments, displacement of the liners transversely of the mould members is prevented by providing a longitudinal groove across the entire casting face of one of the mould members, and a corresponding rib or the like on each liner to fill the groove to the full extent of the liner. As shown in Fig. 4, the lower part or body 2 of the mould is provided with a groove 11 receiving the ribs 8a on the liners 8. The groove 11 is shallow, and the part of the groove not filled by the ribs produces a bead on the slugs ; if the side walls of the groove 11 are perpendicular to the casting face, the bead on the first slug cast will be sheared off when the slug is ejected, and will remain to fill the groove for subsequent casts. The end liners are provided as usual with pairs of holes to fit on studs on the lower face of the upper part or cap 1 of the mould. When an intermediate liner is used for shortening the length of the mould liner, a dummy slug is cast in the vacant portion of the mould slot between the adjustable liner and the left-hand liner during the first casting operation, and remains in the mould until it is necessary to change of length of the mould slot. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the left-hand liner 20 is provided with a rib 21 extending the full length of the mould slot and just beyond the inner face 26 of the right-hand liner 23, the rib 24 of which is correspondingly offset from the face 26. The ribs are attached to the liners by rivets 22 ; in the case of a long liner, as indicated at 28, an additional rivet 29 is used adjacent to the inner face of the liner.
