[Class 120 (iii)] In cottonizing flax and other bast fibres in the form of sliver the sliver produced from clean scutched long fibres in a gilling machine is further degummed by boiling and is broadened out by squeezing rollers combined with rinsing devices and dried, and is then put through a loosening frame containing a relatively large number of pairs of heavily loaded rollers, e.g. from ten to thirty, and having a low draft ratio between the rollers, e.g. of the order of 1À06 by means of which the sliver is completely loosened in such a manner as to enable it to be further treated in the ordinary cotton drawing frame. A number of the slivers after degumming and flattening in a continuous operation and then drying may be wound on to bobbins, while if preferred after the final rinsing the slivers may be drained by suction and led on to a lattice creeper without stretching and then through a hot air drying chamber. Tow may be formed into sliver by means of a tow cleaner and spreader and then subjected to the process set out above, being finally fed as a lap to cotton beater for further treatment in the same manner as cotton.
