Abstract

451,134. Indicating liquid levels. FRONTERAS, E. M., 10, Oakleigh Avenue, Edgware, Middlesex, and BONORA, G., 185, Via Maggiore, Bologna, Italy. May 1, 1935, No. 13014. [Class 123 (i)] In a liquid-level indicator applicable as a fuel gauge, a toothed sector 2 engages a pinion 3 on a drum 4 on which is wound a Bowden cable 6. The other end of the cable is connected to a tubular slide 7 within a guide 8 in a fuel tank 9. A spring 10 tends to force the slide 7 downward. A float 11 is hinged to the slide 7 so that it normally hangs in a tilted position. The drum 4 is prevented from unwinding by a manually controlled latch 12 engaging the rack 2. The drum 4 carries a ratchet wheel 14 associated with a pawl 15 actuated by an electromagnet 17 controlled by a switch 18 of the mercury tilting type. The switch is actuated by a rod 19 passing through an opening 20 in the slide 7, and opening 22 in the float 11, in which the rod 19 is gripped when the float becomes horizontal on reaching the liquid. The pawl 15 is thereby actuated to stop further rotation of the drum 4 and sector 2. The amount of fuel is indicated by a scale 2b on the sector. In a modification, the switch is carried by the plunger 7, and carries a downwardly projecting rod which contacts with a freely-floating float on lowering the plunger, in order to tilt the switch.
