[Class 123 (i)] [See also Group XIX] A float 13 is mounted on a shaft or rod 7, which is preferably flexible, in such a manner that when the float is in contact with the liquid it is locked to the shaft by the effect of its tilting action on a quick-pitch screw. A fixed guide tube 1 is slotted at 4 for the passage of a part connecting a sleeve 6 with the cable 7. A double-armed lever 9 is pivoted at 8 to the sleeve 6, and carries at one end a set-screw 10 and at the other end a quick-pitch screw 11. The screw 11 is secured to a lever arm 12 and float 13. When the cable 7 is operated from a distance to lower the float 13, the latter becomes horizontal on reaching the liquid surface, and the screw 11 is rotated so that it bears against the guide 1 while the screw 10 also bears against the guide and the cable is locked against further movement. In a modification, a second float and lever may be provided in a diametrically opposite position to prevent freeing of the cable when the tank is tilted. Downward movement of the float is assisted by a weight 14. The outer end of the cable 7 is attached to a drum 18, Fig. 5, having a peripheral groove 19 which engages with threads 22 on the casing so that the drum moves axially and the cable passes tangentially into its groove 19. The spindle 20 carries a toothed wheel 23 which actuates a pointer 25 through gearing 24. The spindle 20 also carries a plate 201 and coiled spring 29 which tends to unwind the cable 7 and so lower the float. To enable the drum 18 and float to be locked in any position, the spindle 20 is made hollow to receive a, rod 30 with handle 31. The rod 30 carries a projecting pin 33 and pawl 34 cooperating with a ratchet wheel 35 on the spindle 20. This wheel is prevented from rotating in one direction by a pawl 36. If the handle 31 is pulled outward and rotated, the spring 29 can be wound up. To ascertain the level, the handle 31 is pressed inward to allow the spring 29 to unwind, and lower the float. The parts 30-36 may be omitted, in which case the float must be held in the raised position by hand by means of a knob on the spindle 20.
