Abstract
450,389. Friction clutches. MULLER, H., 41, Ringstrasse, Dessau, Germany. Jan. 16, 1936, No. 1435. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Groups XXXIV and XXVI] Fluid-pressure presser means for clutches comprises a diaphragm built up of thin rings 14 ... 17 of sheetmetal clamped alternatively at the inner and outer edges over an annular fluidpressure space 22 and bearing against a pressure transmitting member 12 when pressure fluid is admitted to the space 22. The rings act as a labyrinth packing when pressure fluid is first admitted until the pressure presses the rings together to form an effective seal. The rings are clamped by members 18-21 of conical form, the pitch of which corresponds to the line of flexion of the rings when pressure fluid is admitted. Spacer plates 26, 27 are clamped between the rings. Disengagement of the clutch plates is effected by springs. In pneumatic clutches a ring of rubber is clamped at both inner and outer edges between the rings 14-17. The particular construction shown comprises two clutches 3, 4 adapted to connect one or other of two bevel gears to the driving-shaft 1. These gears both mesh with a gear which one gear drives in one direction and the other gear drives in the opposite direction.
