Abstract
<PICT:0450145/III/1> Biologically active preparations in a dry state, from which a liquid product may be readily made by addition of water, are obtained by rapid freezing of a liquid or semi-liquid substance, e.g. a serum, by indirect contact with a refrigerant and sublimation of the ice from the frozen material, without previous crushing or comminution, by application of a high vacuum. The serum &c. is rapidly frozen, e.g. by addition of successive thin layers upon the interior of a flask 1 exposed to a low temperature and the flask is then connected, as by a tube 3 and rubber gaskets 4, 6 with a condenser flask 5 immersed in a freezing medium 8 and connected at 9 to a high vacuum. The dried solid material may be kept from contact with air by sealing in a container, e.g. such as described in Specification 450,147.
