Abstract

449,729. Wrapping - machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO., 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A. Sept. 16, 1935, No. 25632. Convention date, July 20. [Class 94 (i)] Packages which have been sealed by the application of heat to the folds are passed through devices for cooling the sealed portions. According to the invention, the package is received from the heat-sealing mechanism and advanced to refrigerated cooling vessels, in connection with cooling mechanism such as is described in Specification 422,835, and having stationary cooled surfaces adapted to directly engage and chill the seals. The packages are advanced over a bottom heat sealing plate 54 and between side heating members 55 of known construction, and arrive upon a band 37, which, with bands 12, convey it to the cooling devices. The devices comprise plates 32 supporting the side cooling vessels comprising expansion chambers 34, 34a and expansion coils 35. The belt 37 extends for some distance between the side cooling plates and is succeeded by a bottom cooling vessel 44 with an expansion coil 45. The width of the apparatus may be adjusted by rotating spindles 23, 25 with right- and left-hand screw threads supporting arms 26, 27, 31. The refrigerating mechanism, illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown), is of ordinary construction. The expansion members may comprise a coil 61, Fig. 5, secured by solder ta a plate 60, and embedded in grooves in a cork &c. base 63. The base may be mounted on the plates 32 or mounted on the blocks 40. The temperature of the vessels may be thermostatically controlled.
