Abstract

449,493. Steam engines. LENTZ, H., 74, Kurfurstendamm, Halensee, Berlin. March 9, 1935, No. 7451. [Class 122 (ii)] In a locomotive adapted to work with highly superheated steam wherein the slide-valve mechanism is replaced by poppet valves and valve-gear, balanced double-beat inlet and outlet valves 19, 21 with inwardly directed spindles journalled one within the other and guided by a cross-piece 33 are inserted in each end of the bore 5 of the valve chest and are operated by oscillating cams arranged in hollow covers 22 which are divided in the central plane of the axis of oscillation and are mounted on the old intermediate pieces 8 and close the bore 5. The old slide-valve liners and chest covers are removed. Steam supplied drop by drop with lubricating oil is supplied to the cross-piece 33. The exhaust pipe connections remain unaltered. The cams comprise exchangeable shoes 24 which act like roller levers, and are mounted on shafts 23 so that their lifting-surfaces pass through the axis of oscillation. Intermediate roller levers 25, 26 operate the valves which are quickly opened and quickly closed without shock. The inlet valve is housed in an insertion piece 18, and the exhaust valve in a piece 20 housed in the part 8. The lever 26 through a hollow push bar 28 and a collar 28<a> moves the outlet valve 21, the spindle 29 of which slides in the bar 28 and in a bore 30 in the insertion 18. The inlet valve spindle 31 extends through the hollow parts 28, 29 and carries a shoe 31<a> which engages lever 25, and at the other end enters the cross-piece 33. The steam acts directly on this spindle, and, through bores therein, in space 30 on the outlet-valve spindle. The two arms on shafts 23 are connected by rod 27. The closing pressure on the valves at one end of the cylinder assist the opening of the valves at the other end. The admission valves act as safety valves. The old safety valves are dispensed with. For idle running, the valves remain open when the steam to spaces 32 is cut off. The engine can be used for slow or high speed by suitably selecting the shoes 24. Specifications 413,485 and 449,492 are referred to.
