[Class 106 (i)] Differential mechanism. The connections between the differential-mechanism and the totalizer-actuators of a cash register include means for imparting to each actuator a movement of fixed magnitude additional to each movement of variable magnitude imparted by the associated differential. The totalizer is permanently engaged with the actuators and driven through a pawl and ratchet, the additional movement being imparted to ensure the engagement of the pawl with the correct tooth of the ratchet. The invention is described as applied to a key set and operated machine of the kind described in Specification 449,004. Each totalizer wheel 24, Figs. 3 and 4, meshes with a ratchet wheel 55 having teeth 54 for co-operation with a pawl 53 on a pinion 49 permanently in mesh with an actuator 42. A toggle link 41 connects each actuator to a pitman 40 longitudinally positioned by the associated differential. In normal operations, the left-hand end of the pitman is guided by a pin 62 projecting into a cam-slot 60, the arrangement being such that the first step of movement of the pitman causes its left-hand end to ride upwardly from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 4. The toggle link is thus straightened and imparts to the actuator a slight movement in excess of the step imparted by the differential, with the result that the pawl 53 is rotated past the tooth 54<a> and its engagement with that tooth is ensured during the return of the actuator. In " Paid Out " transactions, a yoke 63 carrying the pins 62 is moved transversely to disengage the pins from the camslots 60 and allow the left-hand ends of the pitmen 40 to swing idly on the toggle links 41. For this purpose, the yoke is connected by a link 79, Fig. 2, to a lever 76, the cam-shaped lower end of which co-operates with the " Paid Out " key 70. Upon the return of the key, the restoration of the yoke is ensured by a pin 82 on the key, the cam-slots 60 being held in register with the pins 62 by the abutment of studs 80 on the pitmen with the pins. A latch 72 pivoted to the " Paid Out " key prevents depression of the key until a " preset " key has been depressed.
