Abstract

<PICT:0448778/III/1> <PICT:0448778/III/2> Apparatus for drying slurry, plastic materials or powdered solids such as coal and limestone, comprises a rotary horizontal or inclined structure 11 provided with a worm-like vane 16 forming a spiral channel for the passage of drying gases, and with carrier bodies in the channel to which the material to be dried is also fed. The channel may be sub-divided into smaller compartments by radially disposed grids 18, such as a series of bars, extending from the central support 17 to the inner surface of the casing. The grids retain the carrier bodies in the sub-compartments but permit the passage of partially dried material from one compartment to another. In a modification, the material to be dried and the carrier bodies progress together to the discharge outlet where a grid 27, Fig. 3, is arranged of sufficient size to permit passage of the dried material only, the carrier bodies being admitted through an aperture 28 to the hollow central support 24 which provided with an independent worm conveyer 24<a> returns them to the charging end of the apparatus. In a further modification, the central support 24 is of conical form, the smaller end being disposed at the discharge end of the apparatus. The carrier bodies may comprise spherical or cylindrical solids, apertured hollow cylinders, ring-shaped elements, rectangular sectioned helical elements or chains. The apparatus may be combined in one structure with a rotary kiln, the dried material being fed thereto.
