448,572. Packing and preserving edible &c. materials. STURGES, T. E., and SOUTHWELL & CO., Ltd., C., Jacob Street, Dockhead, London. Feb. 21, 1935, No. 5550. [Class 49] In packing edible or other material, the material in an open jar or other receptacle has its exposed surface subjected directly to the action of radiant heat to drive off a portion of the moisture and form a skin or cover of the material, rendering it less subject to deterioration or decay. In the example given, open glass jars 5 containing jam are carried on an endless chain conveyer 6 through a chamber 3 the roof 15 of which has a series of electric heating elements 12-14 by which the tops of the jars may be raised to 300-400‹ F. Covers substantially impervious to air are applied by hand or automatically to the jars as they leave the chamber 3 and whilst they are still hot.
