448,256. Photographic films. VOIGTLANDER & SOHN AKT.-GES., Brunswick, Germany. Dec. 3, 1934, No. 34744. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1933. [Class 98 (ii)] A film base for motion picture and other photographic films comprises a film base proper of difficultly inflammable organic cellulose derivatives having on one or both sides a coating of a material having a higher surface hardness than the base and being so thin that it does not prevent the passage of vapours or liquids to and from the film base proper. The film base may be of cellulose acetate, which is coated with a thin layer of cellulose nitrate, natural resin such as copal, or synthetic resin. The cellulose acetate film base may be superficially converted by nitration to cellulose nitrate. The coating may be applied before or after applying the emulsion layer or after developing, or may be applied to renovate an already scratched film. The thickness of the coating may vary between 2 and 8 Á, and may be 4Á.
