Abstract
Celluloid and like compositions containing nitrocellulose, particularly for the manufacture of sheets for laminated glass, contain polymerized methyl methacrylate and a plasticizer for both the latter and the nitrocellulose, the proportion of the methyl methacrylate polymer being 20--50 per cent that of the nitrocellulose; the proportion of plasticizer is conveniently equal to or somewhat less than that of the nitrocellulose, and the plasticizer is preferably a liquid lower di-alkyl phthalate, for example, di-n-butyl or di-n-amyl phthalate. The ingredients, after preliminary kneading, are worked together on hot rolls; and gelatinization may be assisted by a small proportion of volatile solvent or partial solvent, such as acetone, ethyl acetate or alcohol. The methyl methacrylate polymer may be prepared in the presence of the plasticizer, for example, with di-n-butyl or di-n-amyl phthalate with the aid of benzoyl peroxide. The cr<\>zepe from the rolls may be blocked and sheeted, or it may be converted to sheets by hot pressing between polished plates, or it may be used directly for the manufacture of laminated glass.
