Abstract

447,824. Cathode-ray tubes. BLUMLEIN, A. D., 7, Courtfield Gardens, Ealing, London, and HOLMAN, H. E., 4, Fairway Avenue, Garden City, Yiewsley, Middlesex. Oct. 26, 1934, No. 34772/35. Divided out of 447,754, [Group XXXVI]. [Class 39 (i)] [See also Groups I and IX] An insulated grid, such as a photoelectric mosaic screen of a cathode-ray tube is formed of crossed wires which are coated with electrically insulating vitreous material and are held together by fused joints between the insulating coatings at points where the wires cross. Two sets of wires 28, coated with glass in the manner described in Specification 447,754, are held by means of wax in grooves in copper plates 26, which are faced with nickel. The plates are heated and pressed, preferably until they are in contact, between thick metal plates so that the glass is welded at the intersections. The initial radius of the glass-covered wires is less than that of the grooves. After cooling the plates are stripped off or dissolved in acid. The grooved plates may be obtained from a wax master and are provided with location holes ; the grooves may not extend to the edges of the plates. Each plate may be provided with additional grooves 33 which are adapted to house the wires in the other plate on pressing. In a modification, a set of wires are laid in grooves in a plate, another set is laid on top of the first set and a grooved plate is then laid on top and the whole heated and pressed. The grid may be stripped of its insulation at the ends and mounted by welding within a square aperture in a metal plate. The holes in the grid are filled with metal rivets coated on one side with photo-electric material. Specification 446,661 also is referred to. The Provisional Specification states also that a small amount of weaving of the wires may be utilized to hold the wires together during construction.
