[Class 40 (iv)] In apparatus for measuring the vibration velocity of a source of noise 10, the restoring force between the moving coil 22 and the magnet structure is provided by short column springs 29 and the play of the coil is limited as by a rod 30, Fig. 1. In a modification, Fig. 4, the column springs are supplementary to a pair of cross-shaped blade-spring structures 37. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the rod 20, by which the motion of the body 10 is transmitted to the coil, is supported in self-oiling bearings. The rod 20 may be provided with a disc 42, Fig. 6, to adapt the instrument for use as a stethoscope. Fig. 2 shows the manner in which the ends of the springs 29 are arranged. The Specification includes a theoretical discussion of the principles governing the invention.
