Abstract

Artificial filaments, threads, and like materials in the form of hollow cakes obtained by collection in centrifugal spinning boxes are washed and then subjected to a drying process in which each cake is dried from the inside to the outside, and a water and air tight covering is maintained in close contact with the outside of the cake until the whole of the cake is dry, any excessive pressure of the covering on the outside of the cake being avoided. The covering may consist of a strip of material placed round the cake so that one end laps over the other, and by spring or elastic means, the covering may be drawn inwards as the cake shrinks and thus be maintained in close contact with the cake. A curved strip of metal or material known under the Registered Trade Mark "Bakelite" may be used. The diameter of the curved strip should be somewhat greater than the outside diameter of the cake when dry. The strip is stretched to cover the wet cake and allowed to spring back to embrace the outside surface.
