Abstract
447,534. Discharge apparatus. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Dec. 14, 1935, No. 34788. Convention date, Jan. 11. [Class 39 (i)] An electric discharge tube is surrounded by at least one envelope and is elastically supported from the envelope by means of helical springs whose axes extend radially or substantially radially. Preferably, at least two points of support are provided in each of at least two transverse planes. In the form shown, a lamp 1 is supported within an outer envelope 2 by three helical springs 14 in each of two transverse planes, the points of support in the two planes having a mutual angular displacement with respect to the lamp axis. Projections 12, 13 on the tube 1, with additional or alternative projections on the envelope 2, may be provided to locate the springs 14. The cathodes 7, 8 are helices coated with emissive material and heated by the discharge; directly or indirectly heated cathodes may also be employed. An auxiliary electrode 10 situated near one cathode is connected through a high resistance to the other cathode. A filling of rare gas and mercury may give a high pressure mercury vapour discharge in the tube 1, and the space between the envelopes 1 and 2 may be exhausted or filled with inert gas. For longer tubes, more than two cross-sectional planes may contain supporting members.
