[Class 63] [See also Group VIII] A compound fabric, primarily for making hats, comprises a layer of felt and a layer of knitted fabric, the two having been milled together in a planking or like machine so that the finished material has on one side the appearance of a knitted fabric. The felt is first made to a hat hood; then the knitted material, formed by knitting a tubular material, cutting, shaping, and stitching, is stretched over the felt with or without the use of steam and heat. The material is removed from the block, flattened, and passed through a planking machine. The outer layer may be knitted flat and then shaped by cutting and stitching, or it may be knitted cone-shaped ; it may be of cotton, wool, fur, hair, or mixtures thereof, and may be of different colour from the felt, which may or may not be proofed.
