Abstract
Moulds for casting are produced by embedding a model in a composition produced from two solid components, one containing one or more ceramic substances which harden on burning and one containing one or more substances which react with phosphoric acid ions with the formation of a phosphate which hardens at ordinary temperature, and a solution containing a phosphoric acid or a phosphoric acid ester e.g. ethyl phosphate. Alternatively a solid phosphoric acid or phosphorus pentoxide may be incorporated with the solid components and water used to produce the composition. Ceramic substances specified are clay, kaolin, loam and mixtures of aluminium oxide, silicic acid or silicates. Hardening phosphate forming substances specified are oxides, hydroxides, phosphates, carbonates and other readily decomposable salts of the alkaline earth metals, iron, copper, zinc and cadmium. In examples, a mixture containing 60 parts of quartz powder, 5 parts kaolin, 10 parts chamotte, 15 parts aluminium oxide, 5 parts magnesium oxide 5 parts zinc oxide is mixed with 50 parts of 25 per cent phosphoric acid and with a solution of 9 parts of phosphorus pentoxide in 41 parts of water respectively. The moulds produced according to the invention are particularly suitable for the casing of metals of high melting point such as stainless steels and of ceramic masses such as porcelain for instance in dentistry.
