Abstract

Azo dyes are made on the fibre by coupling thereon a diazo compound of an amine of the general formula <FORM:0447351/IV/1> in which X = aryl and Y = alkyl, with an arylide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, the components being free from groups which would render the dyestuff soluble in water. Brilliant orange shades are obtained. In examples dyes are produced on cotton using the following components: the ethyl ester of 2-amino-4-carboxylic acid-1 : 1<1>-diphenylsulphone and its 4<1>-methyl- and 4<1>-chloro-derivatives; the o-, m- or p-toluidide, m-nitranilide, 5-chloro-2-toluidide, o-, p-, or m-chloranilide, 2 : 5- or 3 : 4-dichloranilide, m-xylidide, b -naphthalide, anilide, o- or p-anisidide and p-phenetidide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid. Specifications 6379/12, [Class 2 (iii)], 17279/13, [Class 15 (ii)], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the manufacture of the above dyes in substance and gives an example of the preparation in substance of the dyestuff.: ethyl ester of 2-amino-4-carboxylic acid-4<1>-methyl-1 : 1<1>-diphenylsulphone --> the o-chloranilide. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Aminosulphones of the above formula are made by condensation of an arylsulphinic acid with a 1-halogen-2-nitrobenzene-4-carboxylic acid, esterification and reduction of the resulting arylnitrophenyl-sulphone carboxylic acid alkyl ester.
