Abstract

447,208. Moulding pellets in extrusion machines. MEAKIN, E. T., 1800, Folsom Street, San Francisco, U.S.A. Dec. 5, 1934, No. 34926. [Class 87 (ii)] In a pellet-forming machine, a rotary ring die a is mounted between housing plates b, c, and smooth or grooved rollers e bear upon the inside surface of the ring die to press the material therethrough, the rollers being rotated by the die. A central roller d bears against all of the rollers e and supports them against the thrust of the material being extruded. The ring a may rotate on a axis disposed otherwise than vertically, but, as shown, the axis is vertical and the drive is effected by a gear wheel i which is meshed with an internally toothed wheel h connected to the bottom plate c. The rollers e are carried on shafts e<1> journalled in eccentric bushes x in the fixed cover k, the eccentric bushes x permitting the replacement of worn rollers e by oversized rollers, the central roller d then being replaced by a corresponding smaller roller. The central roller d is arranged to float between the rollers e, being supported on a rounded projection on a shaft g which carries the ring die a, and being held down by a peg u. The material is fed to the hoppers m through pipes. Scrapers o are secured to the hopper, m and prevent material passing to the roller d. Guards q are circumferentially adjustable around the rollers e, being guided and locked in position by screw bolts s. The guards q limit the amount of material which is compressed between each roller e and the ring a. Material which passes beneath the rollers e is received in a space v and is exhausted by a vacuum pipe. The ring a may be made in sections joined, e.g., by keys f, and it may be driven directly by the shaft g.
