Abstract
447,149. Catching and anchoring tubes in wells. BYRON JACKSON CO., 2150, East Slauson Avenue, Los Angeles, U.S.A. Jan. 18, 1935, No. 1770. Convention date, Jan. 29, 1934. [Class 85] A tubing catcher for use in wells comprises a member connected in the string of tubing and provided with one or more upwardly and outwardly inclined seats, a slip slidable on each seat, spring means urging each slip outwardly away from its seat, and means for holding each slip slidably against its seat. A head 4, integral with or welded &c. to a nipple 1 arranged in the tubing, has inwardly and downwardly tapered seats 5 as described in Specification 389,114; each seat receives a serrated slip 7 with a lower inclined surface 9 seating against a complementary surface 10 in the head 4, the upper end of each slip having a finger 11 with lugs 12 engaging a recess in a slidable actuator 15 to retain the slip in position. A bow spring 13 is arranged in a groove in the rear face of each slip and is bent at its upper end to engage a slot 18 in the actuator, the springs also each bearing against an abutment 21a in the actuator so that the lower end of the spring tends to force the slip outwardly. The weight of the slips and actuator normally holds the slips against such outward movement, but after a break, relief of pressure on the seats 10 permits the springs to force the slips against the casing. An anchor as described in Specification 389,114 may be provided below the device to permit manual control of the slips for anchoring the tubing. In another form, the actuator and springs are arranged below the head, the upper ends of the slips being restrained from outward movement by engaging dovetail grooves or by an outwardly inclined finger engaging behind an abutment on the head 4. The slips and actuator may be connected by reins pressed outwardly by coil springs to actuate the slips. If a single slip is used, the actuator is omitted. Specification 289,228, [Class 102 (i)], also is referred to.
