[Class 100 (i)] Sheet-registering devices of the kind in which the sheets are registered against a front gauge 3 fitted with a covering plate 34 are provided with a suction nozzle 19 for engaging the front edge of the sheet 7 and ensuring its entrance beneath the cover plate 34. As shown in Fig. 1, the sheet 7 is covered by the preceding sheet 8 during the registration, and a preliminary separating device in the form of a hook 20 fitted with a cover plate 21 is movable with the suction device 19 in a slot 36 in the feed table 1 over which the sheet 7 is moved by tapes or bands. A slide 12 which is reciprocated by a cam 17, lever 14, and connecting rod 13 carries the nozzle 19, and the nozzle is moved at the same speed as the speed of the sheet when this reaches the position shown in Fig. 1 and the air pressure in the nozzle is reduced. As the nozzle moves forward the hook 20 is moved backwards by means of a connecting rod 2, lever 23, and a cam 25 formed on the guide 11 which guides the slide 12. The cover plate 21 is thus carried over the leading edge of the sheet, and the suction is then cut off and the slide moved slower than the tapes so that the leading edge of the sheet engages the vertical face of the hook 20 to effect preliminary registration of the sheet. The motion of slide 12 is then decelerated and as the leading edge is brought under the cover plate 34 the gauge 3 is depressed, and the cover plate 34 reaches its lowest position as the sheet touches the gauge 3. The guide 11 is then depressed about its pivot 27 by means of a cam 30 acting on a lever arm 28, and the hook 20 is moved clear of the sheet and the slide 12 and associated parts are moved back to the position shown in Fig. 1 by the time the cam 30 moves the guide 11 about its pivot to assume the position shown in Fig. 1. The preliminary registering devices may be dispensed with, or may form the only registering means. In a modification, Fig. 2, the nozzle 19 is raised about the level of the table 1 at the commencement of its operation to ensure engagement with the front edge of a sheet deflected. upwards. The gauge 3 and cover plate 34 are reciprocated in a vertical direction and also to and from the front edge of the table 1. In its return movement the nozzle 19 is depressed below the table level. In some cases only the cover plate 34 is moved, and this plate may have an oscillating motion instead of a reciprocating vertical motion. The invention may be applied to feeds other than overlapping stream feeds.
