Abstract
446,347. Indicating leaks in gas-filled cables. HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., W. T., 11, Holborn Viaduct, London, and DUNSHEATH, P., Hesket, Church Avenue, Sidcup, Kent. Oct. 27, 1934, Nos. 30879/34 and 12436/35. [Class 99 (ii)] Leakage of gas from a faulty gas-filled cable comprising lengths of cable 5 with intermediate joints 3 is indicated by enclosing each cable length in a pipe or sheath 6 with a small clearance between the two and each joint similarly within a pipe or casing 4, and providing means for detecting any substantial rise in pressure in the several clearance spaces. The invention is shown applied to a threephase system employing single-core cables, of the kind described for example in Specification 400,929, [Group XXXVI], running side by side, separate leakage indicators 10 being provided for each group of three joints and each group of cable lengths which are connected to the clearance spaces of the latter by pipes 9, 11 respectively. Each indicator, Fig. 3, comprises a casing divided by two spring-loaded diaphragms 23 into three parts, to each of which one of the pipes 9 or 11 leads, the arrangement being such that a rise of pressure in one or two of the pipes 9 will cause one or both of the diaphragms to move. The diaphragms are fitted with a rod 31 having a projection 33 normally engaging one end of a catch 40 the other end of which holds a contact member 37 away from a plate 36, movement of the diaphragm in one direction or the other causing the catch to release the contact member to complete an electric circuit which includes an alarm signal 15 at an inspection station where apparatus is provided for locating the indicator at which contact has been made. The projection 33 has a laterally extending finger 45, Fig. 4, co-operating with two indicating collars 46 slidable on a fixed pin 47 so that any displacement of the projection is accompanied by movement of one of the collars ; thus by examining the collars in an indicator on which contact has been made the direction of movement of one or both of the diaphragms can be determined. The indicators may also be used for indicating faults in the pipes 4, 6 by filling the clearance spaces with gas at a pressure slightly above or below atmospheric pressure, e.g., an absolute pressure of 2 atmospheres or ¢ atmosphere respectively.
