Abstract

810,999. Indicating leakages. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Ltd. July 26, 1957, No. 23764/57. Class 99(2). In a device for detecting a leak in a pipe 1 carrying a pressure fluid, a sleeve 4 which provides a sealed space 6 around the pipe has at least a part thereof of flexible material which is distensible by pressure in the space, that part having wound therearound an electrical conductor which will break if the distention exceeds a certain amount. As shown, the pipe 1 extends between fittings 2, 3 and is surrounded by an oil-resistant, synthetic rubber, sleeve 4 sealed to the fittings by clips 5 and defining a sealed, annular space 6. A greater part of the length of the sleeve is wound with inflexible tape 7 ; the uncovered part 8 of the sleeve is distended by the leakage of pressure fluid into the space 6, such distention being detected by the breakage of the electrically-conductive wire 9 of low tensile strength connected to a visual warning indicator. In modifications, (a) a small rod is inserted between the pipe 1 and the sleeve 4 if the latter is almost in contact with the pipe and to provide a fluid channel, and (b) the wire 9 is wound over the whole length of the sleeve.
