Abstract
<PICT:0446137/III/1> Oils are fractionally distilled by passing them through a heating zone into a fractionating tower at a point between fractionating trays, the vapours being separated into fractions which are removed from the top and sides of the column, while reflux collecting at the bottom of the column is removed separately, and the process is characterized in that a fraction of higher boiling point than the side stream fractions is collected medially in the column, mixed with the crude and recycled through the heating zone. Crude oil is pumped by a pump 32 through heat-exchangers 30, 65, 90, 102 and line 107 to heating coils 11, 12 and thence through a line 13 into a fractionating tower 14 in which vaporization is assisted by steam heated in a coil 16. Light fractions withdrawn from the top of the tower are cooled and separated from gases and water in a receiver 22. A supply of reflux controlled by a thermostat 37 is obtained by withdrawing fractions through lines 27, 28 cooling these in heat-exchangers 30, 33 and returning them through a line 35. Side streams are withdrawn through lines 38, 39 to a stripping tower 41 supplied with steam through a line 19 the vapours formed being returned through a line 42. The unvaporized fractions are withdrawn through a line 53 and passed through a second heating coil 57, 58 into a further column 59 from which vapours and side streams are similarly withdrawn for condensation &c., through lines 64, 86, while unvaporized residues are led off through a line 99. The fractionation in this tower is improved by leading off side streams through lines 116, 117 and passing these through lines 120, 122 into the first fractionating tower 14 on to the lower-most trays 15<1> or directly into the bottom of the tower so that they mix with the unvaporized fractions and with them are fed to the coils 55, 56. In a modification only a single heating coil and fractionating tower is employed and the fraction taken off at the middle of the tower is mixed with the crude oil in a container before being recycled through the heating coil.
