Abstract
444,922. Motor-vehicle steering-gear. ALVIS CAR & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and CLARKE, G. T. SMITH-, Holyhead Road, Coventry. Feb. 2, 1935, No. 3450. [Class 79 (v)] [See also Group XXXII] In motor vehicles having independentlysprung steering wheels and steering mechanism including a divided track rod, the end rod parts 13 of which are hinged to interconnected arms 15, 16 independently pivoted on the chassis, the movements of the arms are controlled by hydraulic or other shock-absorbers. The shock-absorbers may be applied to the pivots 20 of the arms or to the rod 17 connecting the arms. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the hub 26 of the arm 15 is fixed to a sleeve 27 journalled on the pivot pin 21 and slidably-keyed to plates 28 which are pressed towards stationary plates 24 by springs 29, friction discs 25 being interposed between the plates 24, 28. The pressure on the plates is adjusted by means of a nut 30. In a modification, a pin on the arm 15 rocks another arm mounted on the same pivot and having a central plate adjustably clamped between stationary plates with interposed friction discs. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the arm 15 is controlled by an hydraulic shock absorber comprising a vane 31, the movements of which force oil through a restricted opening 32 controlled by a valve 33. Specification 424,723, [Group XXXII], is referred to.
