Abstract

444,883. Electricity supply. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Aug. 24, 1934, No. 24434. Convention date, Aug. 26, 1933. [Class 38 (iv)] Equalizing load.-An electric motor 3 operated from grid-controlled rectifiers in associa. tion with a flywheel-converter 5, 6, 7, has a main rectifier 1 supplying it directly and an auxiliary rectifier 8 supplying the driving motor 6 of the flywheel-converter. The excitation and auxiliary circuits may be supplied from a further rectifier 9. The arrangement described is such that, assuming the flywheel set to be at full speed, movement of the controller arm 4 from the position shown excites the field of the generator 5 and the relay 15 ; the latter influences the means 13 adjusting the grid voltage of the rectifier 1 so that it supplies the current required by the motor 3. A relay 16 causes a contactor 17 to short circuit resistance 18 and increase the excitation of the generator 5 so that it participates in the current supply at a given rectifier current. A resistance with an auxiliary adjusting motor may be used in place of the elements 17, 18. A relay 14 causes the rectifier 8 to cease feeding the motor 6 of the flywheel-converter when a given system load is reached, so that energy is drawn drom the flywheel. Where the motor 3 operates as a braking generator it may supply energy to the flywheel. The machines 3 and 5 are permanently connected in parallel. The relay 14 may be placed on the D.C. side of the rectifier 8 or the relay 16 on the A.C. side of the rectifier 1. The adjusting means 11 may be mechanically coupled to the controller 4.
