Abstract

444,809. Spools. LOWRY, A. S., c/o Textile Paper Tube Co., Ltd., Oakwood Mills, Romiley, Cheshire. June 27, 1934, Nos. 18922/34, 1441/35,1442/35, and 1443/35. [Class 120 (iii)] A spool for textile yarns or threads comprises a tubular body of stiffened paper and a hollow frusto-conical base ; the orifice at the apex of the base engages the body with a close fit with adhesive means between them and abutment means on the end of the body engages the inner face of the base to prevent any downward movement of the base on the body. As shown in Fig. 1, the abutment means is formed by a disc 16 having a bevelled edge engaging the inner face of the base 15 and retained on the body 14 by the expanded end 18 thereof ; adhesive 17 is applied between the engaging surfaces of the body and base and also between the edge 19 of the disc and the base. In a modification the disc is omitted and the end of the body is expanded to fit against the inner face of the base. In the form shown in Fig. 10 the abutment means is formed by a paper ring 31 wound upon the end of the body. In the form shown in Fig. 3 wire staples 21 form the abutment means and a metal ring 20 strengthens the end of the body ; the staples project radially from the end of the body and may be deformed by pressure exerted on the base during assembly so that inclined portions are formed to engage the inner face of the base. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the end of the body is expanded to form an exterior shoulder 25 which serves as the abutment means and a metal ring 24 is disposed in the recessed end of the body to strengthen it ; the shoulder may be formed by a bulge on the end of the body, the reinforcing ring being split and disposed in the recess formed by forming the exterior bulge on the body and the ring may be formed so that it can be contracted to engage the recess and the ends thereof afterwards secured together by a tongue and slot. In a further form the end of the body is slit and expanded to form an exterior shoulder which serves as the abutment means and an endless metal reinforcing ring of external diameter greater than the diameter of the recess in the end of the body is forced into the recess. The base may be formed of compressed paper or of wood. According to the first Provisional Specification the surface of the tubular body may be roughened, embossed, or corrugated and may be hardened or rendered moistureproof and the end over which the yarn or thread unwinds may be treated to reduce friction, e.g. by enamelling or by the process described in Specification 416,381.
