This invention pertains to bobbins and bobbin reenforcing means, and while herein forconvenience illustrated as embodied in a wooden spinning bobbin, it is equally applicable to yarn supports such as bobbins, tubes, or the like of other materials, for example paper, indurated. fiber, etc, and whether designed primarily for spinning'or for other purposes. V
As illustrated in the patent to Baldwin et al. No. 1,145,662, July 6, 1915', it has heretofore been proposed to provide a bobbin with a reenforce ferrule comprising inner and outer flanges engagingthe inner and outer surfaces respectively of the bobbin, but I find thatbetterresults both from the stand point of durability and economy of material, can be obtained in accordance with my present invention wherein, while the inner -flange of the ferrule is still retained, I substitute for the long flange, which in the old construction embraced the outer surface of the bobbin, a relatively short-flange, concentric with the inner flange and which is seated in an an-: nular groove in the end ofthe bobbin body. Thisnew arrangement requires less material than the old, it furnishes adequate protection for the inner edge of the body where protection is most needed, and provides a ready means for securing the reenforce ferrulesecurelyand permanently in place so that it can not come off of the bobbin body or turn relatively thereto,

Fig. '7. in thelowerend ,of the base 2 of the bobbin, such .groo've being concentric with the axis of the bobbin and intermediate the inner and outer surfaces of the base 2. At the inner side of this groove I preferably cut away the bobbin to provide a rabbeted surface S, and preferably bIut'not vertical section illustrating a necessarily I" provide an annular recess Rin the wall ofthe bore at a distance from the surface S substantially equal to the length of the inner flange of the ferrule. The inner flange 6 is of such diameter as to enter the bore with a close or driving fit and of such axial length that when. assembled. with the bobbin, its upper edge 9 may be spun or otherwise turned inwardly into the recess R if such be provided, or if the recess be omitted, then the metal may be pressed into the woodsufriciently to make it secure. The outer flange 7 may be made shorter than the inner flange and is adapted to seat with a driving fit in the annular groove G. In assembling the parts, the flanges. 6 and. 7 are first forced into the bore and groove G respectively and then a part or all ofthe upper edge 9 of the flange 6 is turned outwardly, thereby securely retaining the ferrule in position to prevent relative axial movement of the ferrule and bobbin. The frictional "resistance of the flange 7 in the groove G may in most cases be depended'upon to prevent relative -rot a tion of the parts. Preferably the'ferrule is applied to the bobbin before the slots 4 are cut, and these are then. suitably formed, as by a milling operation, which simultaneously cuts outportions of the metallic ferrule and the body of the bobbin proper.
In Figs. 3, e and 8 I have illustrated a modified construction in which the upper edge of the inner flange 6 is provided with teeth 10, while the outer flange 7 is substantially the same as that shown in Fig. 1. In this arrangement the teeth of the inner flange, when the'parts are properly assembled, may remain substantially straight, being embedded in the shoulder 12.0f the bobbin, or they may bend outwardly upon striking the shoulder orbe bent by a suitable tool, while the outer flange 7*"fits snugly, as above described, in the annular groove. Gin the end of the bobbin. If desired,.and in order to obtain still further resistance to separation or relative movement of the parts, I mav strike inwardly small sections 13 of the ferrule, as shown in Figs..3 and 5, so as to form detents or teeth projecting radially outward into the substance of the bobbin base.
, As shown, in. Fig. 11, I. may, ifdesi'red, provide the ferrule with an inner flange 6 of the type shown in Fig. l and an outer flange 7 'whose'surf'ace, either inner or outer or both, is roughened, as for example by providing it with longitudinal ribs or cor rugations.
In the modification shown in Fig. 10'the ferrule has the inner and outer'flanges 6 and upper edges. In Fig. 12 I have-illustrated a still-further modification-in which the ferrule is-furnishedfwiththe inner flange 6 having teeth: 18 at it's upper edge,ow-hile the outer flange-7 has corrugations l9lsimilar tothe corrugations 14: of Fig. 11. In Fig. 13 a still further modification is shown wherein the inner flange 6 has the teeth 20 at its upper end, while the outer flange 7 g has teeth at its in the bobbin, and the teeth 20 at its-upper end may then be spun outwardly into the recess R and become embedded in the bobbin, while the ribs or corrugations 21 become embedded inthe walls of grooveG. Allofz the arrangementsthus disclosed provide. resistance in varying degree against separation or; relative movement of the ferrule and the bobbin while at the same time furnishingproper protection for the inner edge of the bobbin and resisting splitting of the latter, while the ferrule thus produced requires much less material in its constructionthan. the ferrule disclosed in the patent above referredto. a
' While I have illustrated certain desirable modifications of the invention, I wish it to be understood that. it' is not necessarily lim itedv thereby, but that equivalent arrangements may be substituted for those herein disclosed without departing from'the invention.
Iclaimu 1. A- bobbin having.- a longitudinal bore andan annular groove inits end, and a re.- enforce ferrule comprising concentric flanges one of which fits within the bore of the bobbin and the other of which is seated in the groove in theend of the bobbin, and means providing interengaging projections extending along the surface ofat least one of said flanges substantially axially of the bobbin and between the latter and the last-mentioned flange to prevent relative rotation of the bobbin and ferrule.
2. A bobbinhavinga longitudinal bore and an annular groove in its end, and a reenforce ferrule comprising spaced concentric flanges, oneof which fits into the bore of the bobbin and the other into said annular groove, one of said flanges comprising means engaging the bobbin to prevent relative endwise'movement of .the bobbin and ferrule, and the other of said flanges having'peripheral corrugations to prevent relative rotation of the bobbin andferrule. 4
3. A bobbin having an axial bore and an annular groove in its end, and a reenforce ferrule comprising inner and outer spaced concentric flanges, the inner flange fitting in the bore and the outer flange in the groove, the inner edge of the inner flange being turned outwardly into an. annular recess in the inner surf'aceof the bobbin, and the outer flange being peripherally ribbed to prevent relative rotation of the bobbin and ferrule.
A. A bobbin having an axial bore and an annular groove in its end, and a reenforce ferrule comprising spaced inner and outer concentric flanges, the inner flange fitting in the bore and having teeth at its inner end turned outwardly and embedded in the bobbin, the outer flange fitting in the groove and having teeth at its inner end embedded in the bobbin, said outer flange also being corrugated and having a driving fit in said groove.
5. A reenforee ferrule for bobbins comprising radially spaced inner and outer flanges, one of said flanges having a peripherally ribbed surface for engagement with the bobbin to prevent relative rotation between the ferrule and the bobbin.
6. A reenforce ferrule for bobbins comprising radially spaced inner and outer flanges, the inner flange being of greater axial length than the outer flange, and the outer flange having a peripherally ribbed surface for engagement with the bobbin to prevent relative rotation between the ferrule and the bobbin.
