Abstract

Narberth Avenue, Narberth, both in Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) April 5, 1935, No. 10636. Convention date, April 5, 1934. [Classes 103 (iv) and 103 (vi)] A truss type car body construction comprises a downwardly presenting U-shaped roof provided with transverse carlines interconnected by metallic roof sheathing and an underframe assembly consisting of a floor including longitudinally spaced transverse floor beams and longitudinal stringers interconnected by metal plating and vertical posts between the floor beams and roof carlines, the body serving as a hollow open girder in which the roof and floor act as principal compression and tension members. As shown in Fig. 5, the body of stainless steel members spot-welded together is formed as a girder structure comprising a top chord A, bottom chord B, bulkheads 13, 14 and intermediate vertical posts C. The underframe B comprises two longitudinal girders 31 extended beyond the ends of the well portion to carry a truck bolster and support by means of struts 48, the portion of the body overhanging the trucks. The driver's cab is connected to the body by flexible bellows and the vehicle is of stream line shape formed without bending the beams &c. composing it, the roof sloping toward the rear of the body. The side sills comprise upper and lower tubular members 32, 33, Fig. 10 formed by channel members, connected together by vertical posts 35 and covered by plates 34, Fig. 9. The transverse floor beams each comprise an upper closed channel member 37, Fig. 9, and a lower tension member 41 passing under the longitudinal beams 31 which together with spacing members 39 or 42 form compression struts. Plate gussets 51 pass through the side sills between posts 35 and enclose the members 37, 41 and vertical side post 52, the whole of these members being spot welded together. The floor 54, Fig. 10, which is supported by V-shaped channels 53 from the transverse beams 37, comprises corrugated plates filled in with a cork compound and bolted to the beams 37, angle plates 32<1> forming a side extension of the floor and covering the top of the side sills. The roof is supported by post carlines 52 Fig. 13 formed by straight sections spot welded together by ribbed channel sections 56, the posts 52 being connected together by longitudinally extending purlines 57 of channel section. The roof sheeting is connected to the flanges of the carlines and purlines and forms a deep V-section plate girder which forms the main strength member. The upper part of the body above the window openings comprise channel-shaped moulding strips 59, 60 secured by angle brackets 61 and a Z-section roof rail 80 which all tie the carlines together and form a trussed structure. Curved pannelling plates 69 are attached by angles 71 to the posts 52 below the window sill moulding strip 66, this panelling being hinged in the neighbourhood of the trucks for access thereto.
