Abstract
450,191. Railway vehicles. BUDD MANUFACTURING CO., E. G., 2500, Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Ragsdale, E. J. W., and Dean, A. G. ; 2500, Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A.) April 15, 1935, No. 11625. Convention date, April 14, 1934. [Class 103 (iv)] A rail car body comprises a roof structure of transverse curvilinear form including transverse carlines 63 interconnected by metallic roof sheeting 51, a rigid floor 110 including longitudinally spaced transverse floor beams 69 and longitudinal stringers 109 interconnected bv metal plating, vertical posts 59 extending from the floor beams to the roof carlines 63, and chord means 50, 44, 77 to join the vertical posts 59 to form side frame trusses, the entire body serving as a hollow girder in which the side frame trusses act as principal load carrying members. The chord means 50, 44, 77 comprise continuous channel shaped members forming a top rail, belt rail and bottom rail respectively. The top rail 50, Fig. 12, comprises opposed channel shaped members 93 welded to the flanges and bottom of the vertical posts 59 and closed by horizontal channels 83, 83 to form a box-section. The belt rail is constructed similarly but with sloping sides to the channels along the window frames. The bottom rail 77 comprises three channels 78, Fig. 22, two of which, at the floor level, are opposed and form with the channels 83 a box-shaped section and the third channel 78 is situated at the bottom of the post 59, the flanges being welded thereto. Strips 84 pass between the abutting flanges of the channels 78, 83, &c. and form connecting means for the channels 83 on each side of the posts 59 and also for connecting gussets, panelling, &c. The curved panelling 45 below the belt rail is welded together and to angle irons attached to the posts. The roof carlines 63 comprise curved channel sectioned members welded together and form, with the side posts 59 and bottom channels 64, a closed frame. The bottom channels 64 and floor beam 69 are connected by diagonal struts 70, 71 and vertical struts 72, the latter being welded to continuous longitudinal beams 111, 112 which form the principal mid-section tension members of the car. The floor stringers 109 are also tension members and are welded to the floor beams 69 and are covered by flooring 110. The framework in the neighbourhood of the door is strengthened by longitudinal beams 119, 120, Fig. 9, diagonally braced and supported transversely by floor gusset plates 122-124 welded to the floor beams 69 and stringers 109, 111, the length of these gussets increasing from the longitudinal centre of the car to the side frames. The side posts are more closely spaced and additional roof carlines are positioned over the doorway and window openings. Transverse bulkheads 118 on each side of the doorway extend to the floor beams 69 or bottom beams 64. Roof plating 129 may also be positioned under the corrugated roof sheathing 58 and longitudinal plates are secured to the framing above the top rail.
