443,497. Hinges. CHESTON, A. S., and SLEIGH, H. L., Widney Works, Bagot Street, Birmingham, and BOOTH, J. H., Idris, Lichfield Road, Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield. Sept. 3, 1934, No. 25273. Addition to 421,758. [Class 65 (ii)] In long hinges for sheet metal structures, such as motor - vehicle bonnets, of the kind described in the parent Specification, the cover plate is formed independently of the hinge and is secured detachably to the hinge independently of the connection between either hinge member and its associated panel member, in order that the hinge and cover may be given different finishes and then secured together without damaging either. In the form shown, one hinge member 14 has tongues 18 bent round the hinge pin 19, and the other, 20, has a flange 21 passing beneath the pin and cut away to clear the tongues 18. The cover plate 23 has two wings, one of which engages between the hinge member 20 and a doubled-over part 12 of the associated panel member, while the other wing abuts the edge portion of the flange 21 and is covered by a part of the other panel member ; this wing is preferably detachably secured to the flange 21, for example, by screws or by bending over its edge to embrace the edge of the flange. In a modification, the flange 21 is replaced by a series of tongues similar to 18, bent round the hinge pin, the cover being attached only as shown at the righthand side ; in this form the cover may, however, be provided with a series of eyes engaging the hinge pin and welded or otherwise secured to the left-hand wing of the cover, or with such an eye at one end and a detachable clip engaging the pin at the other end.
