Abstract

443,147. Continuous furnaces. CAMPBELL, A. J., Oulton Croft, Stone, Staffordshire. July 20, 1934, No. 21203. [Class 51 (ii)] A continuous furnace comprises superposed independent trains of ware-conveying units c, d, c<1>, d<1> arranged between a roof a and a base b, the units having transverse ware-supporting bars f, and refractory side members e, e<1> which are in substantial contact with one another and are supported and guided by rails h and rollers i so as to constitute mobile side walls to the structure. The units forming each train are not connected to one another and adjacent trains are preferably moved, by rack and pinion gearing or driving chains, in opposite directions so that units may be inserted and removed at both ends of the furnace. In the case of an electric furnace, heating elements may be disposed in the roof and base or in the conveyer units themselves; in the latter case a system of rubbing contacts is provided. The ware supports f are of grid or lattice form and are constituted by heat-resistant wires or bars on which are carried sleeves of refractory material. Entry of air through the joints between the side members e, e<1> is prevented by mercury or like liquid seals or by the provision of asbestos curtains. The roof and /or base may be longitudinally movable in relation to the intervening conveyer trains, and each of the latter may be subdivided transversely into a number of longitudinal sections which are movable in either direction.
