Abstract

537,489. Furnaces for the heat treatment of metal articles. TEISEN, T. Dec. 22, 1939, No. 32791. [Class 51 (ii)] In a furnace through which steel sheets or other articles are conveyed on supporting rollers, the rollers are mounted on hollow axles each having one end situated within the furnace and the other end extending through the adjacent side wall of the furnace, the axles being inter-connected in pairs at the ends within the furnace and consecutive pairs of the axles or consecutive groups of pairs of the axles being arranged to extend through opposite side walls of the furnace. The rollers may support carrier rollers supported at both sides of its axis by the supporting rollers. Figs. 1 and 2 show a tunnel furnace with heating and cooling zones 2, 3 and with supporting rollers 5 mounted on fixed water-cooled axles 6 connected at one end 8 within the furnace and extending at their other ends through the furnace wall. The rollers 5 may support carrier rollers 4 driven from one end by shafts 10. The rollers 5 are made wholly or in part of refractory or other material of low conductivity. Gaseous fuel is supplied to the furnace through passages 11 in the side walls.
