442,956. Sight testing and exercising apparatus. SIMPKINS, R. B., 13, Holly Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham. Oct. 6, 1934, No. 28630. [Class 81 (ii)] [See also Group XX] An appliance for testing the focal ability of the eyes, and for exercising or training them to function with true binocular vision, comprises a bar or the like provided with a plurality of markings or objects which are disposed in direct alignment and spaced-apart relationship in the longitudinal plane of the bar &c., and a means whereby the face is located in the desired position in relation thereto. As shown, a rigid bar 4 is pivotally connected at one end to an extension 5 which is shaped to fit the face. The bar is provided with a series of vertical pillars 8 carrying spherical heads. These heads may be of various colours. The extension 5 is supported on a telescopic stand 10 while the other end of the bar is laterally movable in a slot formed in a frame 12 which is supported by a stand 13. The frame 12 may also support an ordinary optical distance test chart 14. According to a modification, the stands may be replaced by a foldable handle attached to the underside of the bar by which the appliance is manually supported. The pillars may be replaced by spots, letters, numerals or other devices such as small glow lamps to serve as focal objects and these objects may be of different colours. The bar may be replaced by a continuous conveyerlike flexible band or strip adapted for hand or mechanical operation. The focal objects may be either fixed or capable of adjustment on the bar or like member. The extension 5 may be replaced by one or other of the face fitments described in Specification 425,474.
