Abstract

Fashioned articles of wearing-apparel, e.g. brassieres, suspensories, hats, hat shapes, caps, and girdles are made from a fabric of an organic derivative of cellulose free from plasticizer, by fashioning the fabric by distortion of the filaments of the fabric while they are in a heat-softened state. The fabric may be woven, knitted, or netted from filaments, bristles, or straws made of an organic cellulose ester or ether. The flat fabric may be placed between the members of mould-like devices of the desired shape which are heated by steam, electricity, flame, or the like. In the case of a fabric made of cellulose acetate, a temperature of 125 to 180 DEG C. may be employed, but by using temperatures of above 180 DEG C. a stiffened article is obtained due to coalescence of the filaments. When steam or water is present during the shaping operation, p temperatures of about 100 DEG C. are sufficient. If a stiffened product is required, the shaped article may be treated either with a solvent which will cause coalescence of the filaments, e.g. acetone, methyl acetate, and dioxane; with a solution of a cellulose derivative in a liquid which may or may not have a solvent action on the filaments of the shaped article; or with solutions of dammar, copal, elemi, or other resin, or gelatine.
