Abstract
<PICT:0442051/IV/1> In the dehydration of alcohols or ketones wherein the liquid is vaporized in a still 13 connected with a reflux column 9 from which substantially dehydrated liquid is returned to the still and the vapours from which are condensed in a condenser 11 and are collected in a stratifying and decanting vessel 1, the liquid to be dried is passed into the vessel 1 by a pipe line 2 before entering the column. A non-water-miscible volatile solvent of the liquid to be dried is introduced by a pipe line 4 to the same vessel and of the two liquid layers formed the lower, containing a large proportion of the water, is discarded and the upper, comprising mainly a mixture of the reflux liquid with the liquid to be dried is returned through pipe 8 to the top of the fractionating column. The dried liquid passes off as vapour to a condenser 19. Suitable liquids to be dried comprise secondary butyl alcohol, tertiary butyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, isopropyl alcohol; and suitable refluxing liquids comprise petroleum ether, pentanes, hexanes, heptanes and benzol.ALSO:<PICT:0442051/III/1> In the dehydration of alcohols wherein the liquid is vaporized in a still 13 connected with a reflux column 9 from which substantially dehydrated liquid is returned to the still and the vapours from which are condensed in a condenser 11 and are collected in a stratifying and decanting vessel 1, the liquid to be dried is passed into the vessel 1 by a pipe line 2 before entering the column.
