Abstract

441,267. Rotary engines. CINCINNATI BICKFORD TOOL CO., Oakley, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A. June 13, 1934, No. 17540. Convention date, Feb. 16. [Class 110 (ii)] [See also Group XXIX] In a variable-speed hydraulic transmission, each driven rotor unit has two oppositely disposed working chambers of different capacities. A number of rotor units driving a common shaft are provided, preferably with progressively increasing capacities, the capacity of each successive unit being preferably greater than the total capacity of the preceding units. Independently operable valve means enable drive to be effected through any one working chamber, or any combination of working chambers. Each rotor is disposed inside a stator having working chambers A<1>, A<2>, Fig. 1, differing in size, and provided with inlets a<1>, a<3>, and outlets a2, a4. Valves 22, 29 for controlling the inlet a<1> and outlet a<2> are connected to a bar 42 having a handle 1 and valves 34, 35 for controlling the inlet a<3> and outlet a<4> are connected to a bar 43 having a handle m. The operating handles for all the units are centralized as shown in Fig. 8 to form a convenient control panel. Ports 45, 46 equalize the pressure for the working chamber not being used. The inlet and outlet passages communicate with the inner ends of the vane chambers 13 under the control of quadrantal ports 47 .... 50. Intermediate speeds are obtained by means of a byepass valve 53, as described in Specification 441,199, by throttling the inlet or discharge, or by varying the delivery of the supply pump. Specification 441,198 also is referred to.
