Abstract
440,306. Refrigerating. HALL, Ltd., J. & E., 10, St. Swithin's Lane, London, and FARMER, J. D., Dartford Iron Works, Dartford, Kent. April 23, 1935, No. 12212. [Class 29] Compression machines ; cold accumulators. - A system for cooling air &c. circulated as a cooling-medium in ships' holds includes a cold accumulator which alone is cooled by the refrigerating machine while the holds are empty and which supplements the machine while a load is being cooled down to storage temperature, and is then cut out of the circuit. In the system shown in Fig. 1, air circulated in a hold 1 by a fan 3 is cooled by a coil 10 cooled by brine circulated through it and through an evaporator tank 7 by a pump 11. A cold accumulator tank 4 is provided with a brine coil 12 connected to the main brine circuit, and valves are provided in the pipe connections, so that when a load is being cooled down a part of the brine may flow through the coil 12 and mix with that circulated directly to the coil 10. As the cold capacity of the tank 4 decreases the flow of brine through the coil 12 may be diminished. In the system shown in Fig. 2, the coil 12 is connected to the gaseous refrigerant circuit of a plant comprising a compressor 16, condenser 17 and brine-cooling evaporator 7, the brine circuit being confined to the evaporator 7, pump 11 and coil 10. While the hold is empty the refrigerant from the condenser 17 is evaporated in the coil 12 to cool the accumulator medium in vessel 4, the vapour being returned to the compressor by a conduit 13 and the evaporator 7 being cut out. When a load is to be cooled down the liquefied refrigerant from the condenser is passed through the coil 12 without evaporation and is thereby intensely cooled before being delivered to the evaporator 7 to cool the brine. The system is provided with valves, as shown, to control the circuit of primary refrigerant. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 180,342, 285,003, [both in Class 29], and 369,465.
