Abstract

Appts. is of the type in which incoming milk is precooled on its way to a storage tank by passage through a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger uses, as a cooling medium, chilled water drawn from a refrigerated tank of iced water. Improvement is that chilled water from the refrigerated tank can now be passed also through aheat exchanger in the base of the storage tank. The tank base heat exchanger pref. takes the form of flat coil similar to those used in evaporator plates of vapour compression refrigeration systems. The condenser of the ice tank refrigeration system is pref. used to heat up a supply of water for the other purposes. Used for cooling and storing milk collected directly from a milking installation, e.g. in a dairy farm. Cooling is effected much more quickly in the heat exchanger than in the bulk storage tank. The cooling coil in the tank does not entail major structural arrangements for tanks of large capacity.
