439,602. Valves. WERKSPOOR NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP, 62, Oostenburgermiddenstraat, Amsterdam. Jan. 25, 1935, No. 2560. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1934. [Class 135] Mechanism for remote control of a valve 5 and of the type in which a valve-actuating rod is in two parts 6, 8 coupled together by a device by means of which the valve can be closed from a distance, is so arranged that the valve can be returned either to the open or the closed position by means of the distant control. The stem 10 of a member 9 rotatably attached to the rod 6 extends into an enlargement 12 of the rod 8. Balls 20 are seated in conical holes 19 in the enlargement 12, and normally are pressed inwardly by an iron core 16 having limited vertical movement on the part 12, so that when the rods 6, 8 are moved towards one another the balls 20 drop into a groove 21 in the rod 6 and are held therein by the core 16, the rods 6, 8 thus being coupled together. The rod 8 has screwed engagement with a bridge part 3 so that rotation thereof by a hand-wheel 7 causes actuation of the valve 5 when the rods 6, 8 are coupled together. To release the coupling and allow the valve 5 to close under the action of gravity and a spring 24, the core 16 can be lifted either by a rod 27 connected by a wire 29 to a remote manual-control or by closing a distant switch actuating an electromagnet 14 surrounding the core 12 and mounted on a plate 13. To provide for opening the valve, a rod 25 is attached to the rod 6 and extends through and beyond the rod 8. At its extreme end it is attached to the core of an electromagnet which can be operated from a remote control either electrically or by a wire connection similarly to the operation of the core 16. Operation of the rod 25 causes the stem 10 to be lifted so that the balls 20 drop into the recess 21 under the action of the core 16 to hold the valve in its original opened position.
