[Class 146 (iii)] A blotting-appliance comprises a spindle, a backing strip attached at one of its ends to the spindle and adapted to be wound thereon and unwound therefrom, and a blotting strip, which is detachably held to the inner face of the backing strip so as to coil and uncoil therewith. The backing strip 7 is preferably fixed to a sleeve 9 which may be free on a spindle 6 and the blotting paper or like strip 5 is detachably held thereon at one end by a slotted tube 10 which fits over the sleeve 9. The outer ends of the strips may be held together by a clip 11, permitting relative movement of the strips, and the end of the spindle 6 may be screwed into a member 12 forming the end closure for a cylindrical holder which is closed at the other end and in which the device is supported. The member 12 may carry a chain or cord for attachment to any suitable article or may be attached to or form part of a pen or pencil barrel or point protector. In a modified form, the cylindrical holder for the device is open at both ends and one end is closed by a disc carried by the spindle 6 while the other is closed by the screw-threaded member 12. In a further modification, the cylindrical holder is provided with a longitudinal slot through which the strips are withdrawn, a clip or finger grip being provided on the ends of the strips to prevent them passing wholly into the holder. The backing strip 7 may comprise one or more ribbons of fabric or spring metal strips, and the strips may be rewound on the spindle by hand or automatically by means of a spring.
