438,863. Respirators. BARTELS & RIEGER HERMET GES., 61, Ehrenstrasse, Cologne, Germany. Aug. 17, 1935, No. 23184. Convention date, Aug. 18, 1934. [Class 81 (ii)] A respirator g comprising a mask of natural, rubber, viscose, or other sponge is characterized by the provision of a pad a, lying on each side of the nose and sealing the space therearound, and by the provision of an exhaling valve in a fitting b, the resistance of the valve to air-flow being lower than that of the mask. The sealing action of the pad a may be assisted by providing a preferably flexible metal strap on the exterior of the mask. The valve fitting b may be provided with a mask-stiffening member c, preferably of filter paper. The mask may bear against the chin at its lower edge d as shown, or may pass beneath the chin in which case an internal wedge-shaped pad bearing on the chin may be provided. The securing straps h are passed round the neck beneath the ears. A cartridge e, containing noxious gas or like absorbing materials, or desiccating, cooling or other materials, may be removably secured in a socket in the lower portion of the mask. Two layers of the same or different materials may be used for the mask. The outer layer may be used in a moistened condition and may comprise a textile fabric.
