Abstract

<PICT:0438834/IV/1> In order to prevent uneven straining or dyeing of a roll of fabric which has been subjected to a liquid treatment by running it from one roll to another to and fro through a bath of the liquor, by drainage to one part of the roll, it is continually oscillated bodily about its axis to hold the liquid evenly distributed. As described, applied to a jig-dyeing machine, a roll of liquid-treated fabric during the time a sample of the material is being tested for colour is oscillated about its axis by means which may be brought into operative engagement with any one of a plurality of fabric roll-supporting means. The machine may have a pair of shafts 18, 19 each supporting a beam 21 between which the material to be treated is passed repeatedly through a dye vat 14. A gear 48 carried on an arm 46 pivoted on the machine frame may be moved into engagement with gears 49, 51 on the shafts 18, 19 respectively, or to an intermediate neutral position, the arm being held in any desired position by engagement of a spring catch 57 operated by a handgrip 53 in one of a series of notches 59, 61, 62 on a sector plate 63 secured to the machine framing. The gear 48 is adapted to be oscillated through a clutch on the main shaft 36 of the machine controlled by a rod 43. The gear 48 is oscillated by a pitman 66 connected to a crank 68 on the shaft 36. The angle of oscillation of the rolls or beams 21 may be varied by changing the ratio between the gears 48 and 49, 51, and may, if desired, be several complete revolutions.
