Abstract

438,134. Air compressors. STITT, R. R., 1929, Glendale Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. May 12, 1934, No. 14402. [Class 8 (i)] [See also Group XXVI] Air is admitted alternately to the opposite ends of a vacuum cylinder 2, Fig. 3, operating a power piston 5 and compressor pistons 7, 8 on the same piston rod. The air deposits moisture in the vacuum cylinder, and on the instroke of the piston a part of the air enters the corresponding compressor cylinder, the piston of which comprises perforated end plates between which an intermediate piece moves with lost motion, forming a valve. The vacuum distributing valve 14 communicates interiorly with a vacuum conduit 13 opening, e.g. to the manifold of a vehicle engine, into which the condensed moisture and oil are drawn, while the casing 12 of the valve opens, e.g., to the engine crank case, the oil vapours carried over lubricating the valve and pistons. The valve is actuated through a cage 14 oscillated by a pivoted arm 16, Fig. 1, connected by a spring 20 with a shifter rod 21 which carries arms (not shown) operated by striking the piston 5. The compressors supply storage tanks on the vehicle, a valve allowing these tanks to be filled by external means in case of compressor failure.
