Abstract

Compositions containing a purified phenolaldehyde resin are prepared by condensing a phenol with an aldehyde to the stage at which it is liquid when warm but plastic when cold, and pouring it whilst still in the fluid state into a liquid, e.g. benzene, xylene, water and ether, in which the condensation product is insoluble but the impurities soluble, a filler being suspended in the liquid. The filler takes up the resin and the product, after being filtered off and dried, is useful as a moulding powder. It may be further purified by dissolving it in acetone or alcohol and pouring the filtered solution into a suspension of the filler in benzene or the like. When using aqueous formaldehyde for condensation with the phenol, only the lower resin layer is utilized. According to the examples, phenol and m-cresol respectively are condensed with paraformaldehyde in the presence of ammonium hydrate and the warm product poured into benzene in which fuller's earth or wood flour is suspended. The filtered product is washed with benzene or further purified in the manner described above.
