Abstract

436,534. Ball and like mills. MAUSS, W., 158, End Street, Doornfontein, Johannesburg, South Africa. April 12, 1934, No. 11080. Convention date, July 6, 1933. [Class 59] A mill for grinding ores in liquid comprises vertical, imperforate drums, having a planetary movement about a vertical central axis, the ore being fed into each drum through a central aperture through which the pulp is also discharged by centrifugal action. As shown a vertical shaft 4, driven by pulley 7 and gearing 5, is provided with upper and lower spiders 9, 8 adapted to carry cylinders 10 in bearings 19, 15 with radial play so that the cylinders, during rotation, bear upon a retaining drum 27. The cylinders 10 are each geared to a fixed wheel 23 by an idle wheel and revolve about their own axes in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the shaft 4. The drum 27 is mounted on inclined rollers 30 and is free to rotate by the rolling action of the cylinders 10. The cylinders are open at the top 18 and are fed througl rotary tubes 34. The finely ground material and water is discharged over a lip 21 into a stationary channel 35. The gearing is enclosed by a plate 52 and the bearings are lubricated by a pump 39.
