Abstract

435,989. Variable - speed gearing; flexible couplings. HOBBS, H. F., 58, Lillington Road, Leamington Spa. Dec. 29, 1933, No. 36601. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] In automatically variable power transmission mechanism of the kind described in Specification 358,732, comprising planetary weights carried by a casing driven from the engine and connected to an intermediate means, e.g. a shaft, which in turn is connected by spring means to a driven shaft, a flexible coupling is provided between the engine shaft and the casing carrying the planetary weights. The coupling, which may also be located between two parts of a divided flywheel carried by the engine shaft, is of the known type which increases in flexibility with decrease in speed so as to be very loose or flexible in both directions at low speeds and connects the engine shaft A with the casing E. A sleeve B is splined to the shaft A and has four radial lugs B<1> pivoted to each of which is one end of a link D<1>, the other end of which is pivoted to a link D. The other end of link D is pivotally secured to casing E by bolts D<2>. These four pairs of links are so arranged that whilst two pairs tend to straighten, the other two tend to collapse. The links D may be comparatively heavy and are provided with stop surfaces D<5> to prevent inward movement beyond the dead centre position. Specification 135,827, [Class 80 (ii)], also is referred to, and the Provisional Specification refers to Specification 435,988.
